Thanks to the hard work of countless authors here at the Network and abroad, we were able to provide an in-depth baseball preview, complete with fantasy and real life analysis to get you ready for the upcoming season./p pThe final product has finally hit the #8220;shelves#8221; so to speak, as the release went out on the web this afternoon. The team, led by a roster of talented newcomers, finished with the worst record in baseball, securing yet another top pick in the Amateur draft this summer./p pIn a season of losses, few gains were made that kept fans excited about future prospects in St. Petersburg. BJ Upton’s resurgence along with Carlos Pena’s launch onto the national scene bode well for 2008, giving Tampa Bay two legit sluggers to pencil in the lineup. The Rays losses were painful, often handing over leads in the late innings in excruciating fashion. After going 20/20 in his first full season, the sky’s the limit for this former second overall pick. Upton is now settled in as the starting CF, and his bat will only get better as he gets acclimated to his new role in the outfield./p pstrongFANTASY DUD: /strongTroy Percival was brought in to shut the door for the Rays, but his health may prohibit him from becoming the guy you imagine. The 38-year old closer hasn’t thrown more than 50 innings since 2002, and his availability on back-to-back days will be a question until he proves otherwise. Percival won’t be a bad selection toward the latter end of the closer ranks, but don’t expect the lights out reliever that led the Angels to a World Championship six years ago./p pstrongUNDER THE RADAR:/strongFor a guy that was once the face of the franchise, Rocco Baldelli has become an afterthought when you talk about the talent in the Rays stable. Cursed by a body that can’t ever seem to stay healthy, Rocco has lost his starting job in centerfield. Managers and scouts will tell you, however, that the talent that made Baldelli the sixth overall pick in 2000 is still there. It’s just a matter of playing everyday. With less pressure to carry the team, look for Baldelli to restate his claim as one of the better players in a Rays uniform. He’ll likely rotate between right field, designated hitter and maybe first base, but get enough at bats to put up 20 homers and 15 steals. Keep an eye on him./p pstrongPROSPECT WATCH:/strongThe biggest question facing the Rays this spring training revolves around their consensus top prospect, Evan Longoria. Will Tampa Bay start the young third sacker? Or will they leave him in Triple-A, Ryan Braun style, and bring him up a few months into the season? According to the men in charge, Longoria comes into camp with the chance to make the team. Expect that to happen, as Joe Maddon won’t have a choice but to put the former Long Beach standout in the starting lineup. Blessed with great bat speed and a solid eye, Longoria will invoke Ryan Zimmerman comparison in his first season at Tropicana Field./p

It felt like I was never going to get home once I eventually got on the road. Those familiar ten miles seemed to stretch on forever. How did it take me about 30 minutes to drive home?!/p pThe day#8217;s first obstacle was getting into work before nine am. We have quite a relaxed setup in our office and find people wandering in any time up to about 11am! So long as you put in the hours and get the job done./p pOn average I seem to arrive around 9:11. I know, that is pretty exact. But that#8217;s what time I clock when I get into the office. It probably means that I should leave the house eleven minutes later than I normally do, but I#8217;m usually not out until about 17:30 every day anyway, so they#8217;re getting their money#8217;s worth./p h3Training day/h3 pBut today I had a training course (09:00 - 15:00) which was hindered only in the minor detail that it was on a product that I have no involvement or (to all intents and purposes) understanding whatsoever: e:Vision or a href="http://www.tribalgroup.co.uk/index.php?ob=1#038;id=119"SITS:Vision/a./p pIt#8217;s the Web front-end to our student record system called SITS./p pThe training session was on how to create Vistas (views on the data). Which is really useful if you understand what data is there, and why you#8217;d want to create a view on it. Which I didn#8217;t, so understandably felt at somewhat of a disadvantage./p pI was there to understand the system enough to know how to customize its look and feel; it uses simple HTML 4 and CSS. They covered that in about five minutes./p pAt the end of our six hours training session./p pAnd then finished off by saying that if we wanted to customize the whole look and feel of the product, essentially #8216;re-skin#8217; the whole shebang #8212; which we do #8212; then we#8217;d best go on a training course. But not this one./p pAh #8230; oh well. Still it was a pleasant day in an overly warm room with some nice colleagues and university-made sandwiches. Tuna and olives anyone?/p h3CMS Upgrade/h3 pAdd to that the fact that our enterprise content management system, the mighty a href="http://www.terminalfour.com/" title="TerminalFOUR"TerminalFOUR SiteManager/a, was being upgraded from version 5.3.0017 to version 6.0.0014 and you might understand why my colleague and I were a little distracted./p pLooking on the bright side, I did get a href="http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable" title="Firefox Portable"Firefox Portable/a 2.0.0.14 installed on my personal network space as well as the usual array of essential add-ons (Firebug, Web Developer, Twitterfox, Tab Mix Plus, Google Toolbar, etc.)./p h3Friends Reunited/h3 pThis evening I had intended to spend being efficient and productive. I actually spent it mostly replying to emails./p pThe weird thing is that in the last week or so I#8217;ve been contacted by numerous friends #8212; and not via Facebook!/p pTom and Rory both live in New Zealand, in Christchurch and Auckland respectively, and are both coming back to the UK this year for 12 months. Margaret Jane is now an English teacher in my old school in Selkirk!/p pToday I phoned an old school friend Kevin, who lives in Glasgow. Remarkably the mobile phone number he#8217;d given me years ago still works. Had a lovely catch up. I do miss his friendship. We used to spend hours sitting on his bedroom floor #8212; his bedroom was on a balcony above the sitting room! #8212; listening to metal (Flotsam #038; Jetsam, Megadeth, Metallica, Iron Maiden) and it was he who introduced me to Senser, Portishead and a bunch of other cool sounds./p pAnd now to bed #8230; tomorrow#8217;s going to be another crazily busy day. I#8217;ve got some website code that I need to explode and deposit in our content management system.
